The new one is an Acer 5715Z, system-wise nice, got everything, the sound is nice enough so you can watch a video and understand what people say without the use of headphones.
It is running Vista, which I hate to admit do not hate yet. Then again, without running any programs (just some gadgets and skype and stuff) it is already using 1Gb of memory (but it has 4).
Needless to say I probably will test Linux on it.
And Acer decided to install the usual crap, lots of it removed and one of the games provided seems to have a Trojan.

Vista caches a lot of software. I'm actually surprised it's not using at least 2GB. Ideally, it should be using all 4GB because RAM is much faster than your HD. This is a new and documented feature in Vista. It also keeps track of what programs you open very often (daily for example) and pre-load those so that when you start them, they start up nice and fast.
It's very annoying that Vista once again works different than previous Windows versions but it's not a bad OS. I'm not sure if all the changes were necessary though but hey...
That game is a known trojan; it installs Vista through a backdoor which renders your laptop useless!
An Acer... I have horrible experiences with their laptops...
Hey G, that laptop doesn't stay new forever! We the people demand new posts! ;-)
@ Joeri: That was in the 30's, they're pretty good these days ;-P
Hey G, have you been too busy installing and re-installing Windows to write blog entries?
Hi Kees,
Is Nikhef and your site also running on Vista? See http://tweakers.net/nieuws/56419/storing-bij-nikhef-zorgt-voor-netwerkproblemen-internetproviders.html and (at the moment) nikhef.nl also shows a nice error.
